LPSMC Triumphs in Education First Debating Final

On March 24th, LPSMC claimed a resounding victory over Hoi Ping Chamber of Commerce Secondary School in the Education First English Debating Final! Debating a nuanced motion on Hong Kong’s unique Asian identity and the critical importance of English proficiency, our team delivered a stellar performance.

Seriena (4C) set a strong foundation with an eloquent opening speech, expertly laying out key definitions with flawless delivery. Henry (4C) followed with a commanding reply speech that captivated the esteemed adjudicator, local barrister Martin Li, rightfully earning him the Best Speaker Award. Audrey (4D) then anchored the team with a powerful closing speech, featuring razor-sharp rebuttals, insightful clash analysis, and a comprehensive case summary.

Furthermore, the trio's synergy truly shone during the heated 12-minute Q&A cross-examination session. Their seamless collaboration and ability to back each other up under pressure effectively dismantled the opposition’s arguments. Congratulations to Seriena, Henry, and Audrey on this phenomenal achievement!

The day at the Education First Debate Event was truly nothing short of remarkable! Seeing my seniors articulate with pure zeal was a sight to behold. Their commanding tone captivated me, and I was a bit disappointed when it ended. Through their clearly chosen arguments, they convinced me the moment they opened their mouths. Also, kudos to the opposition team. They debated with such a passion I just needed to remark about it! My favourite part was definitely the Q&A though - Henry from our school (Proposition Reply Speaker), with his calculating and brilliant improvisation, confronted head-to-head North (Opposition Closing Speaker), with his passionate approach to his arguments. Seeing them go back and forth was like seeing an elegant fencing match, which could go either way. Ultimately though, Henry delivered the final blow, obtaining the honour of Best Speaker. All in all, it was an extraordinary event which really broadened my horizons. I definitely await the chance to participate again next time!

Audrey, Henry and I put immense effort into our preparation for the long-awaited debate. I gave a flowing, eloquent opening speech, quickly followed up by Henry with his amazing reply speech where he systematically rebutted the opposition’s points, and lastly was Audrey, who ended the debate with a powerful closing. The debate was an inspiring match where both teams really gave it their all. Our teamwork was the best in a long while and we’ll continue to improve.

On 24th March, our team joined the EF Inter-School Debating Competition and earned the title of Champion. This debate was definitely a new experience for all of us with a different competing and speech format, which was in a world style debate format. What I found most striking was the Q&A session. Although this was our first time doing a Q&A session, we managed to exceed our expectations and remain calm even when we were caught off guard. This was also my first time being the third speaker and doing a closing speech. As the third speaker, I had to write clashes and think of rebuttals while listening to the opponent speak. I had to write and think with a quick, critical mind and listen with careful consideration. I was worried at first, but as soon as I started speaking, I let loose and did my best. This will certainly be one of the most memorable debating experiences I have had, and we could never have been victorious without our team and coach working together.
