On the 21st of May, Liu Po Shan Memorial College held its Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2025-2026. Honoured guests, the principal, teachers, parents and fellow students gathered together to witness our beloved Secondary Six students bring a close to their secondary school voyage at LPSMC.

The Ceremony commenced with our School Supervisor Dr. Paul Liu’s remarks and sincere gratitude to the educators and our proud, long-standing school. He subsequently introduced our esteemed, honourable guest Mr. Bernard Chan, GBM, GBS, JP, highlighting his numerous services and expertise across his career.

Beyond the introductory speech lay the long-awaited session – the graduation certification. Our Guest of Honour Mr. Chan shook hands with the graduates this year and issued the graduation diplomas, wholeheartedly sharing the joy and congratulating them, as their proud class teachers called them to the spotlight of the stage – all wore a smile with a lion’s pride on their faces. With jovial claps crescendoing throughout the ceremony, students adorned with remarkable achievements stepped onto the stage, receiving their well-earned scholarships and certificates with cheers and applause from below, filling the hall with an atmosphere of absolute astonishment.

The scene of graduation was followed by an emotional and informative speech sprinkled with some hints of humour, delivered by our Guest of Honour Mr. Chan. He congratulated the graduates for their resilience and expressed wholehearted gratitude to the educators who had supported their students all these years. With his wise words, he stressed that knowledge learnt from our beloved school should not just be taken at face value, as it also teaches us the importance of social networking, a tool of utmost importance for future success. Furthermore, he emphasised that knowledge can lead one far on his path, but it is wisdom that also paves the path ahead. As the saying goes, “Knowledge is the collection of bricks, but wisdom is the building.” He hoped the graduates would forever recollect the memories they had made at LPSMC, for it was an important time in their era of growth and discovery. In the face of the huge slab of uncertainty and challenges that lies ahead in the future, he asserted that it is the understanding mind, the passionate heart of belief and the decisive hands of creation that are the most substantial. As the earnest speech concluded, celebratory gifts were given to the Guest of Honour by our School Supervisor and Honorary School Supervisor Ms. Betty Liu.

The speeches delivered by graduate representatives Jason Chau Cheuk Yiu (Class 6A) and Candy Wong Sin Ping (Class 6D) were truly touching and evocative. Candy Wong articulated her thoughts and gratitude towards the people who had supported her throughout the school years. She first remarked about the long-lasting bonds they had created between themselves, and how they were all reserved in a peculiar, unfamiliar environment at first. She was gladdened that they all they started to open up, as time passed, like a crowd of beautiful butterflies metamorphosing out of their cocoons, creating a dashing, stunning spectacle of joviality and solidarity. She masterfully crafted a metaphor for life using the art of literature, directing to the graduates that, “You are the author of your own story. Make it a good one. You hold the pen that shapes your stories, the future.” She expressed sincere gratitude to all the mentors’ unwavering support and the parents’ unconditional love. She then passed the torch to Jason Chau, who recollected the times of the pandemic, during which Zoom was the chief vehicle for learning. He recalled how his teacher recorded a make-up lecture for his class after a disconnection hiccup that terminated the online lesson. He was forever thankful for his teachers’ refusing to excuse even a single day of their learning, giving them an outpouring of care and sacrificing time and energy for their learning. His granted role as a House Chairperson also taught him the joy of teamwork and the virtues of perseverance and selflessness, through the many trials and tribulations he had encountered yet did not give up on. He wished all fellow graduates the necessary effort, persistence and time to “pull their carrot out of the soil” and nurture success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Chau Yuen Yee and Cyrus Li Kwo Hang from 6B then stepped onto the stage, recounting our school’s special journey as it marks the milestone of its 70th Anniversary. They shed light on the school’s virtues of Benevolence and Achievement, and dived deep into the history of LPSMC. As narrated, Mr. Liu Po Shan was a philanthropic man who stressed the importance of children’s education – while he was in charge, he never excluded a student from learning and growth, no matter their flaws. Thanks to the Lius’ dedication to passing on the virtues, the school was relocated and refined with improved learning environment, letting the legacy of LPSMC continue to shine. After the elaborate history, Ms. Chau and Cyrus Li joyously presented the awards and achievements obtained recently, including the Championship of the Education First English Debate, the Country Knowledge Competition and a multitude of music competitions. The speech ended with the declaration of Ms. Chau’s glorious yet well-deserved retirement. Our school body hoped that she may retire happily, for she will be missed.

Principal Dr. Cheung Wai Sing then concluded with a short note. He concurred with Mr. Bernard Chan, reiterating that soft skills and moral values shall prevail as the world steps into the era of artificial intelligence. In addition, he took the precious moment to honour Mr. Liu Po Shan for his benevolence and express sincere gratitude to IMC and PTA members for the exceptional leadership, the expertise and resources supportive of learning, and the committed efforts in nurturing students with care and love. He pledged to bring forward the virtues of our school into the seventh decades of splendour. Last of all, he congratulated graduates and wished them a promising journey ahead.

With the end of the ceremonial rituals, it was then time for the graduates to express their gratitude towards our school. A band comprising members from each Secondary Six class commenced their musical performance with a warm guitar, with its chords echoing through the entire hall. The playing of the piano then burst onto the scene, and so did the main singers with the emotional and passionate zeal of their voices. Near the end of the virtuosi’s rendition, they ‘maestroed’ the people admiring the performance to hold up their index fingers and wave like a sea of joy. It symbolised the growth and self-discovery the graduates had obtained at LPSMC and the passion and determination to persist in the paths to come. This teary performance aptly echoed a notable quote from the movie Black Swan, “What we do is beautiful, but fleeting. Dance is not immortalized like music, poetry or art. […] It lives for now, for this moment only. And this is your moment.” The live performance felt like the end credits of their graduation. The band explained that graduation was not just an end; it was a start to a new journey, for all beginnings must first commence with an end.

Afterwards, another performance, delivered by the STEM Club, earned the spotlight. As the lights of the room dimmed, drones flew out, creating multiple symbols representing the love and joy all felt towards our alma mater. They were like the stars and zodiacs in the night sky, truly a spectacle to behold. The drones were directed by members as they flew into formations, including a red heart showcasing the love and empowerment to students, and the number 70 to congratulate and celebrate the milestone the school had achieved.

Following the exhibition of pure passion and the state-of-the-art innovation was the grandiose Chinese Orchestra, with their splendid renditions. The first piece Horse Racing started with a barrage of string notes, immediately filling the room with suspense as it built up and crescendoed into a sudden pause, quickly interrupted by strong percussion, like clashes of lightning amidst a cloudburst. The entire piece was like horses galloping in a thunderous, turbulent storm, chased by bolts of lightning, yet still remaining triumphant. The next piece A Man Should Strengthen Himself felt like the calm after the storm, a tranquil moment of rest after the ‘orchestrated chaos’ from the last piece. The music brought a sense of nostalgia, like a flashback to an older, more ancient time of peace and heroism. Both pieces were masterfully performed and conducted by the members of the Chinese Orchestra — a well-deserved kudos to them.

After the grandeur of both peace and chaos, it was the turn for the school choir to carol their way into the people’s hearts. With their ethereal singing, they brought about the realisation of infinite potential within every individual, and heralded the message to forever shine bright no matter what desolate fields or empty dark voids we are in. Surrounding the audience, they completely captivated the room with their piece and delivered a message of faith in harmony.

Graduation is not just an end; it is a start to a new journey. Our school sincerely hopes the graduates will hold dear the fond memories they have shared and the remarkable achievements they have made as they venture into the next phase of their life journey. To all graduates, “Congratulations, you did it!”
